We should all limit our drinking water consumption as much as possible to reduce waste and preserve our natural resource.
Here are a few simple tips to save water, one step at a time:
1- Opt for a smaller capacity toilet tank
Most modern toilets feature a smaller capacity tank. If you aren't ready to replace your toilet with a newer model, you can install a styrofoam liner or even place a few large items inside the tank, such as large rocks (be careful not to obstruct the mechanism or damage the porcelain), to reduce the amount of water used.
2- Adapt your equipment
Without doing major renovations, you can save water by installing a low-flow showerhead and aerators on all your faucets. You won't feel the difference, but you'll make a difference!
3- Turn off the tap when not in use
Don't run the water unnecessarily, get into the habit of turning it off (especially when brushing your teeth). This simple tip will save you dozens of liters of water a week!
4- Don't use your toilet as a trash can
Break the bad habit of tossing tissues and other trash into the toilet bowl and flushing them away. Put them in the trash instead! There's no need to waste several liters of water for that!
5- Run full loads
Whenever possible, don't run small loads of dishes or laundry. Maximize the water you use by waiting until the washing machine and dishwasher are completely full.
6- Make sure your toilet tank isn't leaking
To check if your toilet is leaking, put a few drops of food coloring in the tank above the bowl and wait 10 to 15 minutes without flushing. If you see colored water in the bowl, your toilet is leaking.
7- Skip the garbage disposal
If you've gotten into the habit of using the garbage disposal, try to break it. Garbage disposals use a lot of water to dispose of waste. Opt for a compost bin instead of sending your organic waste down the drain!
8- Keep your showers short
It's always nice to take a long, relaxing shower, but remember to cut down your time under the water or simply turn off the tap while you lather up.
9- Water your flowers with rainwater
Why use tap water when (free) rainwater can do the exact same job?
A rain barrel can be used to water your flowers and garden. You can also choose plants suited to your yard's conditions to reduce their watering needs.
Also, when watering is necessary, aim for the cooler parts of the day to limit water loss from evaporation.
10- Don't overwater your driveway
To clear away leaves, dust, or debris, use a broom instead of a hose. Your driveway doesn't need to be watered!
